Theresa Brown’s newest New York Times Well blog post explores the unique language between doctors and nurses, and how that specialized lingo has a much different effect than everyday English.  As a floor nurse in an oncology unit for the past few years, she knows what she’s talking about.

Brown writes about health care issues and is the author of Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between (HarperStudio). After starting her family, Brown went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a leading contributor to the Well blog of the New York Times since February 2009, where she has authored over 20 posts. She has also published pieces in The New York TimesThe Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Scrubs Magazine, and the University of Chicago Alumni Magazine. She was invited to the White House in September 2009, where President Obama quoted one of her Well posts in a speech about health care reform. Brown has addressed a wide range of issues about nursing, including the importance of nursing to good health care, oncology, end-of-life care, medical ethics, and the challenging working conditions faced by many nurses today.
